SOCIAL STUDIES
Social Studies and LA are combined in the sense that literacy skill development occur in both classes and social content is infused into each project theme. This interdisciplinary approach to learning allows students to more deeply understand concepts within a greater context, which leads to increased value in their learning.
Most recently, we've looked at alternative energy solutions, fossil fuels, history of electricity in homes, Syrian migration/refugee crisis, ISIS, and world's response. We've been discussing, studying, watching, listening to information about terrorism. We've been looking at reasons why it happens, where it commonly happens (in more recent history), names of terrorist organizations, and asking questions about Canada's involvement and responsibilities. Other subtopics such as poverty, radicalism, human impact, and geography have also been identified and learned about. This topic was opened up for discussion on September 11, 2015, which was the 14th anniversary of the twin towers explosions and collapse from the 9/11 hijackings. We've also looked at the opposite of terrorism: heroism and the best of humanity. We've watched various examples, shared personal stories, and looked at what we can do to be an everyday hero - making a difference in peoples' lives as part of our everyday lives. |
